Responsibility is a fundamental part of how business is conducted. Clear standards and accountability towards partners, employees and customers are essential, which is why a formal Code of Conduct is in place. It defines expectations and provides suppliers with a clear framework of principles that reflect core values, ethics and responsible business practices.
Below are key principles that form the foundation of this Code of Conduct.
The use of child labour in any form is strictly prohibited. Employment of underage workers undermines access to education and poses serious risks to children’s physical, mental and social development.
No individual under the age of 15 may be involved in production. Young workers between the ages of 15 and 18 may only be employed under regulated conditions that limit working hours and the type of tasks performed.
Most craftspeople involved in rug production are experienced adults with many years of professional skill. Compliance is further supported through independent certifications and memberships with external organisations such as BSCI and SA8000, which apply structured monitoring and control systems across suppliers and subcontractors.
Respect for human dignity is non-negotiable. Suppliers are required to ensure that all employees are treated fairly and respectfully. Any form of corporal punishment, intimidation, harassment, abuse or degrading treatment—whether physical or verbal—is strictly forbidden.
Equal opportunity and respect in the workplace are essential principles. Discrimination of any kind is not accepted, including on the basis of gender, religion, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, pregnancy, political views or other personal characteristics.
Employment decisions must be based solely on professional qualifications, competence, availability and job performance.
Business activities are conducted with consideration for local traditions, cultural values and social structures. Efforts are made to support economic development within local communities while acting in a culturally sensitive and appropriate manner.
Practices that impose external or incompatible cultural values in ways that may harm local societies are actively avoided.
A safe and healthy working environment is a core requirement. Suppliers must provide appropriate sanitary facilities, access to clean drinking water and workplaces that protect employees from fire hazards, accidents and exposure to harmful substances.
Effective health and safety procedures must be established, maintained and regularly reviewed. This includes emergency preparedness systems designed to prevent, identify and respond to health risks and industrial accidents affecting both workers and surrounding communities.
Where dormitories or canteen facilities are provided, these must meet health, safety and hygiene standards and comply with applicable local regulations.
